An 86-year-old man has spent many hours reading and studying from the comfort of rise and recline chairs to achieve a lifelong dream: getting a high school diploma. James Grammer has made a name for himself in the American state of Ohio by returning to school to get the diploma he missed out on as a teenager.
Mr Grammer left school during the ninth grade so that he could get a job and support his large family, something which he did until he was drafted into the American Army to fight during World War II. Upon his return he worked as an electrician, but he always thought back to his days at high school and his missing diploma.
Fellow students at Massilon’s Adult Basic Literacy Education program said that they learned more from him than they ever did during history lessons and they were all ready to celebrate when Mr Grammer was finally awarded his high school diploma.
